New Delhi [India], July 18: IILM University unveiled its Doctoral Programme in Management at a high-impact industry-academia research colloquium. With the theme “Creating Value Through Research: Why Business Needs Doctoral Thinking,” the event brought together top minds from industry and academia to spotlight the power of research-driven leadership in shaping the future of business.
In an era where India is rapidly attempting to position itself among the world’s top three economies, the future of management education rests on more than operational excellence; it demands a culture of evidence-based research and innovation capable of shaping both policy and enterprise. Speaking to this urgent need, Prof. Harivansh Chaturvedi, Director General at IILM Lodhi Road, emphasised in his opening remarks the importance of strengthening India’s doctoral research ecosystem to match its global ambitions. Citing the fact that industry invests only 0.3% of GDP in research and development, he highlighted the critical gap between national aspirations and the institutional capacity required to deliver meaningful outcomes.
Building on this call for a stronger research culture, guest speakers Prof. Rajendra Srivastava, Novartis Professor of Marketing Strategy and Innovation and former Dean of the Indian School of Business (ISB), and Mr. Prem Singh, President of Group HR at JK Organisation and Hon. National President of the NHRD Network, shared compelling insights on how doctoral thinking can bridge the gap between academic inquiry and business impact. Drawing from anecdotal experiences and practical examples, they emphasised that investing in research talent should be seen not as an expense but as a strategic investment, and called for a shift in performance metrics from short-term profit margins to long-term growth and innovation. At its core, the discussion reinforced a shared belief in the need for India to anchor management education in evidence-based research, as a pathway to building a resilient startup ecosystem, driving innovation and achieving sustainable growth.
Prof. Rahul Singh, Director of Research. and the International Office emphasised the need for real business problems in doctoral work, which brings in high relevance and contributes to the knowledge ecosystem. Dr. Singh also mentioned that the programme will bring in some of the best global scholars in the domain to mentor, guide and interact with researchers. The Ph.D. programme at IILM University has been revamped to bring global experiences in developing applied research on real business problems and practical applications of theory and business knowledge. The Ph.D. programme (full-time and part-time/executive) will invite candidates with full-time in-residential format and professionals with qualified experience.
Through its new Doctoral Programme in Management, IILM University takes a step forward in equipping future scholars and practitioners to create research-driven impact across business and society.
