The Smart Cities Mission sounds ambitious, but the math exposes its limits: ₹59,385 crore for 31 cities → ₹1,915 crore per city

For an average 20 lakh population, that is barely ₹955 per person per year not enough to fix core infrastructure, let alone build a “smart city.” At best, it funds cosmetic retrofitting.
By 2035, nearly 65% of Indians about 900+ million people will live in cities. Existing systems are already overstretched. To make cities livable and future-ready, India needs Capex of at least $1 trillion (₹90 lakh crore+) in the next decade.
Current investment is short by 10–15x, leaving urban India critically underfunded.
